Home Calling is a residential addition for clients yearning to return home to Melbourne after many years living abroad.
The project was motivated by a longing for home, amplified by a great distance from it. Home Calling is shaped by both absence and connection…carefully managing neighbourhood amenity, views and security on an inner city site through thoughtful detailing and composition.
From the heritage protected streetscape, the two-level addition defers to the Federation frontage. Feathered timber shutters and finely detailed steel awnings offer a sense of lightness and fine grain resolution to the intervention beyond. From a rear street, the massing is less apologetic - the addition confidently contributes to the urban context as a composition of bagged brick and timber shutters.
On a terraced ground floor, internal spaces have been conceived as series of interplaying architectural elements, arranged to imbue occupation with sensory delight. Concrete steps are grafted into the kitchen, while a ceiling peels downward to receive a skylight, creating a naturally lit threshold to the original hallway. An upper-level retreat with a focus on framed views fosters a sense of belonging and connection to place.
